Daryl Smith CMM reports on the June Boatyard Course held at Sulphur Point, Tauranga, where there was a diverse range of trainees.

The cross section of trainees had limited experience with different types of operations, and benefited from being able to see a mobile hoist in operation, a yard of the scale of Vessel Works, a trailer in operation and a 350 tonne machine – the first time for many of them seeing several of these types of operations.

“It was therefore a huge learning curve for all involved and all were extremely keen participants,” says Daryl.

The course work, like usual, centered mainly on the actual boatyard operations with overviews of all three different lift operations.

“All eight participants were very keen to learn and involved themselves in the discussions showing a will to advance in the industry”

Dary says that the diversity of participants from various yards and backgrounds created robust discussion and valuable learning experiences.

Daryl has produced a new log book for those with trailer operations, and is also completing one for the 350 tonne operation.

“Our yards are changing and NZMOA has a key role in keeping people well trained and safe,” he says.

The next Boatyard Operations course will be held on 19-20 October in Wellington.
