No to in-water hull cleaning

Boatyards filter and recycle water and create far better environmental outcomes from hull cleaning activities

Boatyards filter and recycle water and create far better environmental outcomes from hull cleaning activities

It may be the easiest and cheapest option for NZ boaties, but cleaning your boat in the marina is not a great idea, says NZMOA.

Marinas that have invested in minimising their impact on the environment are conscious of everything that goes into the water, and in-water cleaning adds to sedimentation on sea beds, and ultimately affects water quality.

Additionally, many marinas have fought hard for consents to complete extensions and new developments, and this practice can sit outside of their conditions.

NZMOA is currently working with the Ministry of Primary Industries and others to develop a consistent guidelines for hull cleaning and antifouling. With a range of rules and regulations in place in relation to hull cleaning and preventing the spread of marine pests,  a national standard for hull cleaning that marinas can enforce will make national efforts to combat marine pests more effective.

Additionally, a number of regional councils are working together to develop one consistent set of rules for vessels travelling between regions.
