Awards well worth effort, says 2020 recipient

Nylonut - the no rust nut - was the recipient of a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the NZMOA Most Outstanding Initiative category of the 2020 NZMOA Awards and its inventer, Darcy Blackmore, says it helped put Nylonut on the map and gain acceptance in the industry.

“Nylonut is my creation and as such there as no ‘pre-approving’ audience for the product,” says Darcy.

“Just about all the products used in the New Zealand marina industry are tried and true products from overseas. Nylonut needed local recognition, local acceptance and local buy-in.”

He says that entering was a simple process but also an opportunity to look inside the project and talk about the how and why.

“It was really good to go back and reflect on ‘why the industry needs Nylonuts’ particularly as I invented the product in response to problems the industry was facing.”

He says that being recongnised and having pictures featured on the NZMOA website was a special feeling and encourages others to enter.

“Take a leap of faith and enter your product, no matter how big or small, how cost effective or expensive,” he says. “I still look at the award on my wall and think it was worth the effort.”
