The heavy-duty Super Elite reinforced concrete pontoon units are a recent addition to Paihia Wharf, installed to access public and commercial vessels. The upgraded pontoons allow for an increase in the number of cruise ships visiting the Bay of Islands, through what is one of New Zealand’s busiest marine passenger terminals. United Civil tasked Superior Jetties with upgrading the wharf’s floating pontoons. This included the design and manufacture of five new pontoons and five gangways.
A proven commercial marina and superyacht product, the massive one-piece, Super Elite pontoon system was used. This features a high freeboard to suit large vessel requirements in an exposed location. The pontoon base has a fully welded PE base liner system and steel reinforced pile brackets. The 5 sided 50 MPa concrete pontoons are fixed with 4 x sleeved steel piles and include vertical fenders & bollards. This high individual pontoon mass provides more stability against environmental forces.
Designed to withstand wave heights of 1.2m, the largest of these pontoons is 10m x 4m and weighs an impressive 22 tonnes.
Heavier, reinforced gangways manufactured from marine grade aluminium, at 12 – 16 metres in length were installed with Regupol rubber flooring. Designed for 4kPa public access, the gangways are hinged with a roller support and a transition plate to land on the pontoon allowing for the rise and fall in tide.
