Findings of third Covid-19 industry survey

A survey of the New Zealand marina industry in relation to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic shows the industry continues to be generally strong and confident. Facilities, including boat ramps, are being well used but the loss of visiting internationals is felt.

Members of the New Zealand Marina Operators Association (NZMOA) were asked to indicate how their metrics or perceptions had changed as a result of Covid-19.

90% of respondents said their confidence in the industry for the next six months had improved. One respondent reported slightly worsened confidence in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Respondents are still confident that their marina projects will proceed. All but one respondent believed that as a result of the pandemic, marina projects, including extensions, refurbishments and improvements, would continue as planned.

It was a busy summer and 90% reported use of marina facilities, and 50% reported use of boat ramp facilites was up on usual for the time of the year.

Nearly all respondents said they have not noticed any differences in customers paying their invoices in full or on time. Two reported noticing some worsening.

Some noted concerns about the impact of the lack of visiting international vessels on their operations, and the importance to them of visiting vessels and their crew being able to stay in the country. One noted that the recreational boating sector is enjoying a boom but that the same might not be said for the commercial sector.
