Poralu Marine delivers New Zealand’s first Eco-friendly Marina
Poralu Marine is proud to announce the construction of stage 2 of its first marina project in New Zealand. Poralu Marine has assisted Tauranga Marina Society with the design and modernisation of their floating marina which is located at the North end of Sulphur Point in Tauranga Harbour, Bay of Plenty.
Tauranga Marina Society (TMS) took bold but well-informed decision for the renovation of its Marina by choosing the Poralu Marine system. Traditional construction methods have been set aside in preference for high quality and robust aluminium frames and composite decking which are 100% recyclable.
The innovative design offers users significant benefits such as modularity, easy access to all the utilities and safe, clean, high quality and attractive pathways. Future stages combined with the modularity of the docks will allow the flexibility to configure and reconfigure layouts based on needs.
With a long-term vision in mind, incorporating flexibility into the design of the berths was a key decision factor for TMS. The objective was to find solutions to allow bigger boats - including Catamarans - to berth in the marina, despite the limited space. With a new design and the vast range of Poralu Marine standard products, the available space was optimised resulting in an increase in the number/size of berths without loss of functionality for the users.
Poralu Marine was chosen for its sustainable products and efficient installation process
New Zealand has high conservation standards, especially for the marine environment. Marina developers are encouraged to safeguard the local ecosystems throughout the life-cycle of their projects. Yet, the dismantling of traditional marina infrastructure can be particularly tedious and harmful. The waterlogged parts can separate when lifted from the water during the demolition phase and pollute the seafloor. Poralu Marine offers a more sustainable alternative. The aluminium structures are easy to remove and disassemble. With their high recycling rate, they support the development of a circular economy at “end of life”.
The challenge of renovating the entire floating infrastructure during daily operations, especially in a crowded marina environment such as TMS, is to build efficiency in the pontoon replacement process: meaning to achieve the minimum time possible to manage the overall replacement cost whilst keeping the marina operational. With very little lifting and handling equipment required, the Poralu Marine system can be pre-assembled on land and on water before being towed to site and connected to piles in fully constructed elements, up to 100m long. The staging of the installation coupled with the ability for rapid assembly allowed Tauranga Marina Society, to optimize vessel management during construction.
