Momentum on Marlborough Sounds Marinas projects

Oyster Bay Jetty at Havelock North

The workshop team are constructing a new jetty in Oyster Bay to replace the dilapidated old fuel Jetty.
The new jetty is slightly wider and longer than the former version and the works includes the reconstruction of the adjacent rock revetments. Additional maintenance and repair works are being done while the team are on site, including fender piles around the main wharf and lighting improvements. Although the piles look a little ‘rustic’ they are recycled hardwood piles that still have significant life left in them.

Waikawa Marina Extension

Since our reclamation Contractor re-established on site following the Covid-19 lockdown, they have made fantastic progress on forming the reclamation. You may have noted the large number of trucks travelling down the western side of the marina carting the loads of rock rubble fill as well as the rock armouring material to site. The Simcox team have progressed very well and have bulk filled material for over 300m along the coast line. They are currently undertaking three main activities on site; bulk filing with the rock rubble material, placing of geogrid to help stabilise the fill material and then placing the final rock armouring to protect the formed reclamation. They have completed the placing, shaping, stabilising and armouring to over 150m of the reclamation. This process will continue over the next couple of months forming a total of approx. 450m of reclamation.

Havelock Channel Dredging

The approach channel to Havelock Marina requires maintenance dredging every few years to maintain the depths required for vessels to access the marina. Dredging work kicked off shortly after lockdown and is now complete. The work was done using an excavator on a barge, with the material then offloaded and trucked to a site in the marina. The last time dredging was carried out in this area was seven years ago..

(Notice the speed camera image, it’s an 8 knot speed restriction in the channel) It has been quite helpful with educating speedsters

Havelock Recycling Compound

After a number of evaluations we decided to provide full recycling facilities within Havelock marina including the usual glass separation, plastic, aluminium, cardboard, Used oil and acquis waste. This has provided opportunity to centralize our general waste also which has greatly reduced the risk of refuse finding its self into the water ways.

This initiative has been rolled out across Picton and Waikawa marinas also.
